(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Election boards throughout Illinois are being told to hang on to records past the standard 22 months because of an organized campaign threatening legal action.

Those who don’t believe — or don’t like — the results of the 2020 election are behind the campaign, flooding election boards with Freedom of Information requests.

Matt Dietrich, with the Illinois State Board of Elections says they’re all pretty much identical.

“What we’ve seen are coordinated efforts, and it’s obvious when you get the exact same thing, or very similar items, that are copied and pasted in maybe a different order,” Dietrich said. “They’re all pretty much cookie cutter requests.”

Dietrich told WMBD in Peoria, election boards are being bombarded with FOIA requests for things that don’t exist, and they “cannot disprove a negative.”

WMBD in Peoria reported this is a distraction for some smaller counties that threatens to get in the way of preparations for the upcoming election.

Officials said some of the people involved are demanding to see their 2020 ballots so they can be sure their votes weren’t changed.
