Many U-46 students would like remote learning option to continue into future

ELGIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Many students from Illinois’ second largest school district say they would like to see remote learning continue to be an option in the future.

Student representatives reported Tuesday to the Elgin District U-46 school board on the results of their annual student summit held via Zoom on Feb. 26.

Student representative Graham Hunt said some students like the idea of keeping online learning as an option.

"Pretty much all students ensured us that in-person learning is still the best option for academic success and engagement; however, many stressed the importance of allowing more flexibility in their academic schedules and noted that this year has been an eye-opening experience into different possible educational opportunities, structures and environments.”

District U-46 School Board President Sue Kerr asked if the students at the summit discussed what such a setup might look like.

“We knew that that would be a big task to take on, and it could look like a lot of different things,” Hunt said. “I think the overall message, though, was that students just want to see other options outside of the standard in-the-building-from-7-to-3 type schedule.”

But another student advisor pointed out that not everything about remote learning has been sunshine and roses. Student representative Vishnu Srinivasan said students say they want to see more discussions in class, instead of lecturing by teachers.

"Many said they value these interactions, especially considering the students who are distance learners on Zoom which creates more barriers for them to engage with one another," Srinivasan said.
