
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- There was some damage caused by several tornadoes Monday night, but a year ago on Aug. 10, the Chicago area and the Midwest dealt with a whopper of a storm system.
The National Weather Service said that a year ago, a line of intense storms known as a “derecho” raged across the Midwest, causing the costliest known storm event in modern U.S. history. It resulted in $11.5 billion in damage in an area of more than 90,000 square miles.
Peak winds hit more than 140 miles an hour in Iowa and at least 26 tornadoes were produced by the storm stretching from Iowa and Wisconsin to Illinois and Indiana.
One of those tornadoes hit the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side.
In all, in the National Weather Service Chicago area had 15 confirmed tornadoes that day.
