Guess who's trying to punch above their weight class these days?
Yep. Mazda.
And they're leading with an uppercut that they call their new "Signature" series.
We had a chance to test their new Signature series in their four-door 6 series…Mazda's competitor to the Camry, Altima, and other mid-sizers.
Step out of a Lexus and into a Mazda Signature 6 and you won't find much missing.
You'll find a lotta' heated and cooled leather and premium sound and just all-around attractive-ness.
But as for "go", that's been on the modest side…until '19.
Our '18 had a conventional non-turbo 6 that put out 187 HP and got an EPA 35 MPG on the road. Not bad. We kept up with all traffic and managed 32 MPG on the road.
But for '19 and beyond, you've got someone in your rear-view mirror, Audi and Lexus.
That 187 HP 2,5 four cylinder now has a turbo attached.
Hello 250 HP…and a whole lotta' more "GO". And still well under 40K and 30+ MPG.
Mazda's Gran Touring versions already provide you most of the luxuries and safety features that you'd expect. "Signature" ups the ante by adding special trim, Nappa leather, wood trim, overhead storage, 360 degree view, and front and rear parking sensors…which, alone, might save you more in body damage than their $3,000 asking price.
While not quite ready to chase an Audi 4 or 6 around Nuremberg…or challenge Lexus in terms of silence…Mazda's new 6 is here right now to give you around 90% of what the premium brands offer…at 10 – 20 K less.
