In an emotional and powerful press conference today, Colorado Buffaloes head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders revealed that he was recently diagnosed with aggressive bladder cancer, a health battle he chose to keep private until now.
Sanders shared that the cancer was discovered in April during routine scans. Though the tumor was non-muscle invasive, it was classified as high-risk. As a result, Sanders underwent surgery to completely remove his bladder and had it reconstructed using part of his intestine. Despite the severity of the operation, Sanders' medical team confirmed that he is now cancer-free.
The coach, known as "Coach Prime," said he initially kept the diagnosis from his sons, including Colorado players Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, telling them he was just dealing with a foot issue. He did, however, inform his daughters and eldest son, Deion Jr.
The surgery and recovery was tough. Sanders lost nearly 25 pounds and now relies on a urostomy bag or adult diapers. Still, he maintained his trademark sense of humor during the announcement saying that he "Depends on Depends," and reassured fans that he will coach the upcoming 2025 football season.
This isn't Sanders' first health scare. In 2021, he had two toes amputated due to blood clots, and in 2023, he underwent surgeries for circulation issues. But today, Sanders stood tall, grateful for life and committed to leading his team and inspiring others.
"I'm 100% back," he said. "God is good. I'm here, I'm coaching, and I'm ready."
Sanders recently signed a five-year, $54 million contract extension with the University of Colorado. His courage, faith, and transparency are already inspiring fans far beyond the football field.
