If you're coming to Georgia for college from another state, the transition can be pretty overwhelming. From navigating your college campus to a new city, we know how hectic it can be, so we wanted to leave you with some do's and don'ts as you come into college.
1. DO try your best to either visit the college you plan on attending beforehand or do research to familiarize yourself with the area
Moving states can be scary but it's even scarier if you have no idea where you are when you get there or what's around you. If possible, try to visit the school prior to your move-in date so you can really get a sense of the area and also venture off campus to learn what you have nearby and what you don't.
2. DO get involved on your campus
Probably the one of the easiest ways to make friends other than befriending your roommate(s). College campuses are swarmed with different organizations from political to physical and some clubs based on what coast or state your from-- it's a sure way to find people with similar interest to you.
3. DO find hobbies in the new city that you did back home
There's no doubt that you'll eventually experience moments of being home-sick so some ways to combat that are by finding things that remind you of home. If there are particular activities or events that you'd attend at home, try to find similar events in the city or campus that you're moving to.
4. DO get to know the staff and professors on your campus
You literally never know when you may need someone to vouch for in the financial aid office or you need a letter of recommendation, having a great relationship with the staff and your professors can go a LONG way. Good professors and staff members can take the place of aunties and uncles, so don't shy away from building those bonds.
5. DON'T lose sight of why you came to college in the first place
Yes the new found independence, the parties and campus events can be exciting but don't let those things stray you away from your academics. Having a low GPA can disqualify you from joining certain orgs and programs and even have you placed on probation or worse have you kicked out of school. Learn to find a balance with having fun and staying on top of your academics.
We hope this gave you some guidance as you embark on your journey to receiving higher education!
