When Kirk Cousins was first benched for Michael Penix Jr. it almost seemed like there was no chance the Atlanta Falcons would be able to trade him, and the feeling was Atlanta would just have to cut Cousins and eat his remaining $27.5 million-dollar salary and get nothing in return.

Now, that feeling has done a complete 180° and it seems like the Falcons will not only be able to trade Kirk for at least one draft pick, but they might even be able to get a team to pay part of his remaining $27.5 million dollar salary.

Earlier today senior NFL Reporter, NFL insider for the NFL on Amazon Prime, and lead content strategist for The Monday Morning Quarterback Albert Breer joined The Morning Shift and explained why he thinks the Falcons’ veteran quarterback won’t be on their roster past June.

“I do think there’s gonna be a team that’s gonna get desperate here, and I don’t know exactly who it is, but I think you know all of us we’re waiting on what Aaron Rodgers is gonna do and then there’s gonna be some dominoes after that, Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco.”

“And you know all you gotta do is just sorta count up these situations and look at it and say there’s probably gonna be somebody who’s gonna be left with something they don’t like, and is gonna be looking for an alternative, and you know I think in the end like there’s a good chance that Terry Fontenot and his group wind up looking pretty smart for waiting this thing out.” Breer said

Albert did say it was unlikely that the Falcons would find a team that is willing to take on all of Cousins’ remaining $27.5 million dollar salary, and when it comes to potential landing spots for Kirk Breer said that a lot of where Kirk ends up will depend on “where Aaron Rodgers winds up”, but he does think that “there will be an opportunity out there somewhere for them to get a draft pick back for Kirk Cousins”.

Something that sounded nearly impossible, or in Albert’s words would’ve been a “massive upset” three months ago seems like now it’s not so much a matter of will it happen, but when will it happen, and to Albert’s point if Terry Fontenot can pull off at least getting a draft pick back for Kirk that will be a massive win for Fontenot and his staff, and they’ll look “pretty smart” for waiting it out.
