Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra has been fired, as announced by the team on Thursday morning.
Bocanegra has held the role of Technical Director since 2015, when Major League Soccer announced that the city would be receiving the expansion franchise. He was promoted to Vice President in 2017 when the team kicked off its inaugural season.
Under his leadership, Atlanta United took the league by storm. The franchise won the MLS Cup in 2018, U.S. Open Cup in 2019, and became the first MLS team to win Campeones Cup in 2019.
However, since that run, Atlanta United has struggled with consistency.
They missed the playoffs in the COVID-shortened 2020 season and have fired their manager on three separate occasions, including Gonzalo Pineda in June. They have finished no higher than fifth in the East and have failed to advance out of the first round.
Atlanta United currently sits in ninth place in the East with seven games to play this season, but only five points out of last place in the conference.
