The Atlanta Falcons didn't take a quarterback early in the 2021 NFL Draft, instead adding tight end Kyle Pitts and safety Richie Grant in the first two rounds. To help bolster the offensive line and protect Matt Ryan, who's going to be under center for the immediate future, the Falcons drafted offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield in the third round with Pick 68.
Ed Warinner was Mayfield's offensive line coach at Michigan and joined The Morning Show with John & Hugh Monday to give some insight on how Mayfield will fit into Atlanta's system.
"You got a great one,"Warinner said. "[He] tries to finish people," which Hugh instantly said means the young lineman is "trying to snatch souls."
"He's a great finisher," Warinner continued. "He'll be a great left guard for you, I think that's a good fit for him." Warriner told the guys Mayfield doesn't stop at the whistle, he plays "until the whistle ends."
When Hugh asked if Mayfield could start from Day 1 for the Falcons, Warinner didn't hesitate.
"Jalen has a high football IQ," said his former coach. "He understands the game. He'll be able to pick up the system. I know the [Falcons'] coaching staff did a lot of research on him. I know one of the guys who worked with me, an analyst for me, was at Tennessee with your head coach and they did a lot of research on Jalen. He's a good fit for what they want to do."
