The Padres and Braves played a back and forth game on Opening Day, with the Padres coming from behind to win 7-4. The game marked Jurickson Profar's first game in San Diego since leaving the Padres in the offseason, and he received a big ovation from the fans at Petco. Michael King got into trouble in the first inning, loading the bases and allowing one run on a fielder's choice by Ozzie Albies. But the Padres responded immediately, with Jackson Merrill driving in 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to put the Padres on top 2-1. Albies blasted a 2-run homer in the 3rd, and King's day came to an early end. Merrill tied the game on a groundout to first base, as Albies and Merrill each drove in the first three runs for their respective teams.

The pivotal point in the game came in the bottom of the 7th inning with the Padres trailing 4-3 after Austin Riley's solo home run. Gavin Sheet entered the game to pinch hit for Brandon Lockridge, and blasted a game-tying home run in his first at bat with the Padres. San Diego would add three more insurance runs in the inning to take a 7-4 lead. The bullpen was terrific, with Yuki Matsui, Jeremiah Estrada, Wandy Peralta, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez combine for 5.1 hitless innings, with Suarez nailing down his first save of the season.
