An Atlanta family embroiled in the scandal surrounding R. Kelly are reacting to his sentencing Wednesday in New York Federal Court. The R&B singer is sentenced to 30 years in prison for racketeering and sex trafficking.

Tim and Jonjelyn Savage are the parents of Joycelyn Savage, described as a 'girlfriend' of Kelly's. The Savages describe their daughter as being 'brainwashed' and that she was being held against her will as she lived with Kelly. The Savages were featured in a 2019 documentary exposing numerous allegations against Kelly.

In a statement Wednesday, Savage family attorney Gerald Griggs says they are pleased with the sentence handed down. He adds, "They hope it will continue to send a strong message that sexual predators will be punished for their illegal conduct. It is their continued hope to reunite and reconnect with their daughter. They hope that now Joycelyn will return home. They are glad that the Court heard the voices of the survivors."
