The Attack on Women's Right to an Abortion Takes Center Stage in Georgia

This week on, On Point with Juandolyn Stokes', Law and Legal with CK Hoffler, one of the hot topics they addressed was Georgia's Supreme Court and the argument on the heartbeat abortion law. These arguments are pivotal as they will either kill the law or breathe new life into Georgia's heartbeat abortion law.

The heartbeat law is ripe with controversy as it says women cannot seek an abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy, which is much sooner than women even know they are pregnant, which invariably blocks women who either need or want an abortion from getting one.

The law went into effect in 2019, after Gov. Kemp and many other Republican governors across the country joined forces to strip women of this right they have had since 1973.

Last fall, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ruled the abortion law was invalid because at the time it was signed into law, the U.S. Supreme Court still allowed abortions beyond six weeks.

Many women have grown increasingly alarmed in recent years at the seemingly attacks on women's rights in general, but specifically as it relates to abortion rights.

Juandolyn compared the abortion hearings in Georgia to the Florida Republicans attempt to ban girls younger than sixth grade from discussing their periods.
