Dr. Christopher Loftis, National Director of VA/DOD Health Collaboration joined On Point with Juandolyn Stokes this week to share information about the “Today I Am” campaign, which encourages veterans to take care of their mental health.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is offering resources for veterans who need mental health services and sharing their stories.
“We are offering support for family and friends, which features veterans talking about how they struggled and how they were encouraged to get help,” said Loftis.
According to Loftis, there are several things that cause stress like career change, or relationships that make veterans realize they are struggling.
“Military populations have a harder time reaching out for help because they are taught to be self-reliant,” said Loftis.
There are several types of resources available to help veterans including self-assessments, videos, non-clinical support, cycling groups are all ways to take small steps toward mental health and well-being.
Loftis says what is most important for veterans is “focus on the positive.”
