(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A female African lion that lost its mate early this year at Brookfield Zoo has also died, zoo officials announced Monday.

The lion, Isis, was euthanized Tuesday morning after she was injured in a fall. Officials said staff had kept a close watch on Isis since her mate, Zenda, was euthanized Jan. 2 after suffering age-related problems.

Fourteen-year-old Isis was found lying on the floor of a moat in her outdoor habitat on Monday. It appears she fell and sustained significant injuries, and the decision was made to put her down the following day, the Chicago Zoological Society said in a news release.

“Isis and her mate were majestic animals who had a strong bond. The staff, who dedicated their lives to care for these charismatic lions, are heartbroken by their loss,” added Zeigler.
