(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Parishioners at St. Adalbert's continue to fight plans by the Chicago Archdiocese to close the century-old church next week.
A protest outside the church in Pilsen Sunday morning was held in English, Spanish and Polish.
Julie Sawicki, president of the Society of St. Adalbert, said they have appealed the Archdiocese's decision and claims their rights are protected under canon law.
Blanca Torres said she wants the church preserved after generations have been baptized, gotten married and worshipped there.
Ward Miller, executive director of Preservation Chicago, said the church that was built in 1912 has made his group's list of most endangered buildings twice.
The Archdiocese says it made the decision to close the church after considering its small weekly attendance, limited parish resources and significant costs to repair the building.
In a statement, the Archdiocese calls St. Adalbert "an anchor in the Pilsen community for more than 100 years" and says any future plans for the property will be sensitive to the desires of the community.
