CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago couple is on the final day of their wedding and honeymoon weekend in California, and one part of their weekend has gone viral on social media.
"It was completely unplanned,” 30-year-old Curtis Ferland of Chicago said.
"We were finishing up our sunset wedding pictures that any couple does after their ceremony and it was the last picture we took."
Just-married, Curtis and Katie Ferland's photo backdrop was Sonoma County, California.
"The fires were not that close, probably 20 or 30 miles away. But the winds were blowing our direction, so you got that smokiness and the way the sun looked."
They'd brought masks along, just in case the smoke got worse. Their wedding planner suggested a shot with the masks on.
"American Gothic" meets surrealist Magritte.
The photography studio, KMR Photography, posted it on social media, and the phone started ringing with requests for interviews.
Ferland, interviewed Tuesday, said the fires forced them to move the reception indoors. Some in the wedding party had to evacuate their hotels.
But, he added, "We couldn't be happier with our wedding."
On the fires, Ferland says: "We hope everyone get through it safely, and that's all we're thinking about now, is we're hoping the region can get through and recover."
