CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Video of a doctor at Edward Hospital in Naperville talking to his colleagues about race has been viewed by tens of thousands of people and has started a dialogue.
In the video, you can see Dr. Daryl Wilson in scrubs addressing colleagues outside Edward Hospital.
They're taking part in a "White Coats for Black Lives" vigil.
Dr. Wilson is an Emergency Medicine Specialist.
"I can leave here, take off all of this garb and I just become one of the threatening, dangerous black men in America. So when you guys think about the privilege that you have taking off your uniform and still being a white person in America, remember what I go through," Dr. Wilson said.
During a phone interview, Dr. Wilson said, "who do you see me as first? Do you see me as a human first? Do you see me as a physician? Do you see me as a black man and if you see me as a black man, what then does that mean to you? What inherent bias comes up in your brain?"
His colleagues were moved, he said.
"I thought it was important to let individuals know, you have to start looking inside and seeing where your heart lies and what things you need to change," Dr. Wilson said.
Colleagues, he said have told him, 'I've never looked at things in that perspective.'"
He said, "as we live in the moments that we live in now and the future is still unwritten, we can now start making a change for the future, so a lot of my colleagues have come up and they're very thankful that I said these words because they've never had that perspective brought to them."
He added, "we have a great opportunity that we can't squander. Dialogue is the beginning and then we have to take dialogue and make it into action."
