CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For people with depression where medications haven't worked, a magnetized helmet could be the answer.
A North Suburban neurologist said a magnetized helmet by Brainsway, a medical company that is changing the field of therapy for depression and other brain disorders through innovative technology, could work better than medication. For those who have not seen results from pills or who want to try a non-invasive method, Dr. Geeta Bansal said the helmet uses repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to create elecytronic pulses in the brain that target imblanaces that often lead to depression.
She said the feeling is like a small woodpecker picking at the brain, which might sound strange at first. However, she said patients get used to it so quickly that it becomes integrated into their daily routine, like reading books and watching TV while wearing a pulsing helmet.
"A couple patients have fallen asleep during the treatment, which we do not allow for safety reasons," Bansal said.
