CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Field Museum held a celebration of the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans in honor of Native American Heritage month.
The event included singing, dancing, hands-on demonstrations and artifacts on display.
Geneva GoodBear, one of several Native Americans who participated in Saturday's events, wants people to remember native culture and the roots of this country.
"We need to just let people know we're around," said GoodBear.
GoodBear said her culture is often associated with the past, but she wants to make sure it remains just as vibrant in the present and the future.
"I think its important to celebrate them, their resiliency, courage and bravery," she said. "We still have our language, I still have my cultural teachings.
Alaka Wali, curator of North American Anthropology at the Field Museum, said the Native North American Hall is about sharing native people's culture beyond a designated heritage month.
"We hope all year long people will come here to learn about this amazing culture of people who lived here long before this became America," Wali said.
The Native North American Hall is currently undergoing renovations after remaining unchanged since the 1950's.
"Our aim here is to really tell these stories from the native peoples perspective," said Wali.
Renovations are expected to be completed in 2021.
