CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The recreational marijuana business has had its best month since sales in Illinois became legal in January.

State officials reported Thursday that Illinois set another record in May in recreational marijuana sales, with more than $44 million in transactions.

Illinois residents spent about $34-million on cannabis products, and out-of-state visitors picked-up another $10-million making, for a total of $44.3 million. May was the best sales month since recreational marijuana became legal in January. The previous record was set in January when $39 million of cannabis products were sold.

According to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, nearly one million individual products were sold - also a record.

In additional to record recreational marijuana sales, medical marijuana sales reached $32-million.  The Tribune reports that keeps the state on pace to set a new annual record for medical marijuana sales this year.
