Off-Duty Officer Returns Fire, Shoots Man During Attempted Carjacking In South Chicago

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An off-duty law enforcement officer shot a man Thursday while returning fire during an attempted carjacking in South Chicago on the South Side, according to Chicago police.

Police said at about 2:30 a.m. the officer, 36, was driving through an alley in the 7900 block of South Phillips Avenue when he was approached by at least three males and one of them flashed a gun. The group demanded the officer get out of his car, and then fired shots in his direction, the Sun-Times reported. The officer was not shot.

The off-duty officer then returned fire, striking one of the men in the arm, police said. After being shot, the man ran to the foyer of a building in the 7900 block of South Essex Avenue, where he was taken into custody and taken to University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.

According to police, the two other men ran from the scene and are not in custody.

Charges are pending against the male in custody, police said.

According to the Sun-Times, the off-duty law enforcement officer does not work with Chicago police.

Area Two detectives are investigating.
