CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It was one year ago Wednesday that Chicago Police Commander Paul Bauer was killed.

Illinois State Police will hold a memorial service on Wednesday at noon at the Thompson Center.

That's where the 53-year old was fatally shot at around 2 p.m. while police said he was confronting a man who had run from officers attempting to talk to him. The suspected gunman, 45-year-old Shomari Legghette, has been charged with first-degree murder and other charges and is awaiting trial after pleading not guilty.

Chicago police chaplains are expected to speak and a state police honor guard will lay of a wreath near the stairwell where he was shot.

Members of the mounted police unit as well as bagpipers from the department's Pipes and Drums group are expected to be there.

Bauer led the mounted unit before becoming commander of the Near North District.
