DES PLAINES (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Des Plaines woman went into labor at home on Wednesday morning — and before she could even get out the door, the baby started coming. But help arrived when a Cook County Sheriff's police officer knocked on the door.
The first to respond to the 911 call was Sheriff's Police Officer Susano Viramontes.
In his four and a half years with the department, he's mostly been to crime scenes. But never delivered a baby.
"So I was just winging it, to tell you the truth. And all of a sudden I got a towel, the baby was out," Viramontes said. "I told her, 'Hey, congratulations, you've got a baby girl.' I wrapped baby up in a towel and then in her mom's joggers."
The mother, Nicole Makaris, said Officer Viramontes did well.
"I was shocked and he did a very good job helping me out," Makaris said.
Viramontes said one does not often have good encounters with the police but this one was of them. But this experience created a special relationship that will be cherished for years to come.
"Because this child, Bella, I'll be able to see her grow up," he said. "And she'll be able to see me get older."
