CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The verbal sparring over gun violence continues between Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.Board President Toni Preckwinkle is standing fast in her view that Mayor Lightfoot and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson are misdirecting blame for some of Chicago’s continuing gun violence to the courts.

The Mayor said judges are letting too many repeat gun offenders out on bond. Preckwinkle sent Lightfoot a letter saying the rules that have reduced the jail population are not making the streets more dangerous.

"The criminal justice reforms that have been undertaken in Cook County have contributed to equity and greater justice for everyone who comes in contact with the criminal justice system - that's been our goal and they do not, I repeat do not, contribute to the struggles that Chicago continues to have with shootings and murders," Preckwinkle said.Preckwinkle said she and Lightfoot’s staffs are in communication, and the two leaders plan to meet by sometime this fall.
