(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Illinois gun owners and others are suing state government because of big delays in the processing of Firearm Owners Identification cards.
Richard Pearson, director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said on Tuesday the last thing his organization wanted to do was file a lawsuit. But he said Illinois State Police have been falling further and further behind in issuing so-called FOID cards.
State police are supposed to issue the cards within 30 days of applying. But it’s now up to 90 days, and Pearson said you can’t blame coronavirus shutdowns. The backlog has been a problem since 2013, he said.
The Illinois State Rifle Association argues that the rights of would-be gun owners are being abridged because of the delays.
This is a federal lawsuit and at least two of the named plaintiffs are military veterans.
