CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Tuesday marks the second straight day of downright brutally cold conditions, and, unfortunately, a significant warm up is still a ways away.

Chicago area residents woke up this morning to below zero temperatures and even harsher wind chills. Early Tuesday morning, much of the region saw wind chills approaching 20 below zero.

The National Weather Service had a Cold Weather Advisory in place for the entire area. It expired at noon for much of the region. The alert is still in effect for far western counties such as Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, Lee and DeKalb.

Tuesday tonight, temps will begin to drop and situate in the low single digits, AccuWeather says.

The next two days, Wednesday and Thursday, will remain bitterly cold. According to AccuWeather, temperatures will likely fail to get out of the teens.

The thaw won’t come until the weekend, AccuWeather says, with a high finally expected to eclipse 30 on Saturday.

In the meantime, the City of Chicago is providing warming centers at more than 200 public facilities such as libraries, park district buildings, police stations, City Colleges facilities. The Department of Family and Support Services has also activated six warming centers at the City’s community service centers.

They are as follows:

-Englewood Community Service Center - 1140 West 79th Street
-Garfield Community Service Center - 10 South Kedzie Avenue
-Martin Luther King Community Service Center - 4314 South Cottage Grove
-North Area Community Service Center - 845 West Wilson Avenue
-South Chicago Community Service Center - 8650 South Commercial Avenue
-Trina Davila Community Service Center - 4312 West North Avenue

In suburban Cook County, three special warming centers have been activated and will run continuously until 5 p.m. Tuesday. They are located at the Skokie Courthouse (5600 Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, IL), Maywood Courthouse (1500 Maybrook Dr., Maywood, IL) and Markham Courthouse (16501 S. Kedzie Ave., Markham, IL).

Other suburban counties, such as Lake, DuPage, Will and Kane, are also providing numerous warming centers.
