(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health is warning residents about the dangers of rabies.
Twenty-seven rabid bats have been reported in the state so far this year with several of them in Chicago-area counties, according to IDPH. There have been five rabid bats each in Kankakee and Lake counties, four in Cook County and three in McHenry County.
IDPH said people should avoid bats whenever possible, especially when they are active during the day or unable to fly, as these bats are more likely to be rabid.
“Bats are the most common source of potential infection in Illinois, and exposures from bats tend to be more frequent during the summer months, especially July and August,” IDPH said in a news release.
If a bat is in your home, IDPH recommends waiting to speak with animal control or public health officials before potentially capturing or releasing it.
Rabies can also be found in other wild animals. It's recommended not to touch, feed, or attract them.
