3 people killed when high-speed freight train hit car in Gary

GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gary’s fire chief said three people were killed when a high-speed freight train collided with a vehicle Tuesday morning.

Gary Fire Chief Mark Everette said the train versus vehicle collision happened about 7:30 a.m. at the railroad crossing at Miller Avenue and Howard Street.

He said the gates were down but that the vehicle went around them.  He estimates the vehicle was hit by a freight train traveling between 50 and 70 miles an hour.

“I’m just speculating, there was one train stopped just east of the tracks and, I’m assuming, the person probably thought the gates were down for the stopped train and the high speed train came through,” Everette said.

He said the victims all appeared to be adults and had been ejected from the vehicle.

He said this was about the fourth train versus car crash in Gary this years, adding one person was killed in a similar crash at another crossing less than two months ago.
