CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The domination of "Everything Everywhere All At Once" at the Oscars was another indication that Asian films are increasing in popularity, and soon, Chicagoans will get a chance to see even more work from Asian filmmakers.

“It started eight years ago, when I saw there was a void of Asian films on any film festival platform in Chicago,” said Sophia Wong Boccio, the founder and executive director of Asian Pop-Up Cinema (APUC).

Wong Boccio said times have changed and Asian films have arrived.

“I think, in a way, the pandemic made it [happen more] because the streaming platforms these days are expanding and putting on so much content, that once you start hitting ‘Asian films’ — woah, it’s exploded,” she said.

The explosion will continue on Saturday, when APUC’s semiannual film festival begins and runs for one month with films showing in downtown, the North Side, the South Side, and Evanston—as well as streaming.

“It’s the live representation of the filmmakers making their trip all the way to Chicago,” she said. It’s the golden connection.”
