CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- While President Trump continues to challenge the results of the presidential election, civil libertarians are preparing to fight for restoration of voting rights they believe have been unraveled.
Colleen Connell, director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, said the ACLU will be fighting for full passage of the Voting Rights Restoration Act, sponsored by the late Congressman John Lewis.
She said it would restore parts of the original voting rights act stripped out by the Supreme Court in 2013.
"And what we saw in the wake of the Shelby County decision was a resurgence of effort particularly by states in the old conferacy to enact voter repression laws, such as voter ID laws, laws that scaled back early voting, laws that scaled back voting by mail," Connell said.
The restoration measure is now stranded in the Senate.
