
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Aurora opened a mass-vaccination site Thursday in a closed Carson’s store at the Fox Valley Mall.
Mayor Richard Irvin opened the site, with a focus on vaccinating minorities.
The city has been doing outreach through three organizations: Black Vax Aurora, Latin Vax Aurora, and Indian Vax Aurora, together forming Unity Vax Aurora.
"We know if our community has the correct information and correct access to vaccines; and community advocates promoting the safety and necessity of the vaccine, we can decrease hesitancy and increase our vaccination rates," Mayor Irvin said.
Representatives of each organization spoke before shots were being administered to about 1,000 people.
Congresswoman Lauren Underwood said "we will soon be able to hug our loved ones, sit across the table from friends at a local restaurant, and hope that this dark period of our history is coming to an end."
Christopher Hoff, with the DuPage County Health Department, urged people not be afraid of skeptical and to get vaccinated.
