(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The push continues to make the South Side church where the funeral for Emmett Till was held in 1955 to be made into a National Historic Monument.

“This church is a key part of our nation’s history,” Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland said during a forum at the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ at 4021 South State St. “I want to listen and learn and better understand your vision for how we, as a federal family, can help honor the story of Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ and the story of Emmett Till and Mamie Till Mobley, God rest their souls.”

Congressman Danny Davis, D-Chicago, said he was the same age as Emmett Till – 14 – when the Black Chicagoan was murdered in Mississippi while visiting relatives there. Two White men murdered the teen after Till allegedly made comments to a wife of one of the men.
