(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A church in Lakeview is hosting a an event this weekend that is unique by most church standards: a “Drag and Spirituality Summit.”

The event in Chicago is set against the backdrop of recent vandalism at a Lake in the Hills bakery that planned a family-friendly drag show.

There also were threats against a Downers Grove library that planned to host Drag Queen Bingo.

“People fear what they don’t understand,” says Pastor Juan Pablo Herrera of Urban Village Church.

Herrera is one of the organizers of this weekend’s Drag and Spirituality Summit, which will feature drag queen and king performers and panel discussions.

“As our Christian values of loving our neighbor — drag queens are our neighbor — this is our way of saying we love you, you’re included and you’re loved,” Herrera said.

“And not only that but we want to hear you. You tell us your stories.”

Pastor Herrera says he knows the summit — at the Center on Halsted and Broadway United Methodist Church — will be mostly preaching to the choir.

But he hopes along the way, someone’s heart will be changed.
