FOUND Hotel clerk claims self-defense in stabbing New York City firefighter

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A River North hotel clerk charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a New York City firefighter claims self-defense during a bond hearing Saturday.

The attorney for Joel Brown said he was dragged into the kitchen of the FOUND Hotel Thursday by the man he's charged with stabbing.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported prosecutors say Brown challenged the 29-year-old firefighter to a fight before punching him although Brown's attorney said the firefighter hit first.

Prosecutors said Brown told the man's group to get out and threw their luggage at them then picked up a knife and approached one of the would-be guests when the firefighter intervened and Brown stabbed him six times.

The paper said Brown's attorney says he got the knife when he was being attacked. A judge set bail at $75,000.

Brown is due in court next week.
