CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson says he's not ready to say whether NASCAR was good for Chicago over this past weekend, but he did offer some compliments.
Johnson on Monday said he's grateful that Chicago residents adjusted their lives around the road closures and other changes needed for NASCAR's first-ever Chicago Street Race. And he said NASCAR adapted to the volatile weather.
Otherwise, he’s deferring judgment on the first year of what is a three-year deal between Chicago and NASCAR. He said he’ll assess the NASCAR event with the help of others and did not offer a timetable.
“I’m a teacher, so I will assess it and grade it,” Johnson said.
The administration of his predecessor, Lori Lightfoot, cut the deal with NASCAR.
Racing events over the weekend were compressed because of frequent rainfall and, at one point, lightning. A shortened version of Sunday’s Grant Park 220 did get off the ground to appreciative crowds.
