(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s first Summer Float Party is this Sunday, and organizers say there’s a lot of interest in floating 2 1/2 miles down the Chicago River.

Friends of the Chicago River are sponsoring the event. The group has been around since 1979, when actually getting into the river was risky business.

And Margaret Frisbie, executive director, says some people are still skeptical that the river is clean enough.

“I think there’s more people that are — I don’t know — afraid of the Chicago River system because of its history, the legacy of pollution that haunts it,” she tells WBBM Newsradio.

“But that’s why events like the Summer Float Party are important. If people see people out on the water, they start to realize how far we’ve come.”

Tickets are on sale through Thursday. They are $45 each.

The river float goes from River Park near Swedish Covenant Hospital to Clark Park, near Lane Tech.

Participants must wear life jackets. They are to bring an inner tube or some kind of float toy for the trip.
