CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Chicago Board of Elections says more than a half a million Chicagoans have voted before today’s Election Day, either in person or through the mail.
Voters were lined up when the Chicago Loop Supersite opened at 6 a.m.
Diane, who moved here from South Carolina, said she registered and voted at the same time. She spoke to WBBM outside the busy Supersite across the street from the former Thompson Center, telling us the whole thing took about an hour and a half.
“I knew I had to vote, so I didn’t have a choice with that one, just kind of happened,” Diane said.
She said she felt somewhat elated and relieved and will not wait for the results.
A spokesman for the board said some early voters cast their ballots after midnight last night, meaning they were in line by 6 p.m and had to wait.
Today, you have until 7 p.m. to be in line in order to vote. As of 9 a.m. today, more than 611,000 in Chicago have cast their ballots, this includes vote by mail and early voting.
If you’ve waited to drop off your mail-in ballot, there are 55 secure drop boxes across the city including at Wrigley Field and the United Center.
Chicago Board of Elections Chair Marisel Hernandez said if you’re voting in person today in the city, you can have other options beside your assigned precinct place.
“Choose whichever one is most convenient for you, and you can vote on the spot,” Hernandez said. “All of our early voting sites and this downtown supersite is open today from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.”
Hernandez added they have 8,000 judges and poll workers helping people today.
A team of attorneys are standing by to investigate any issues that come up.
