(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A growing infestation of rats in North Riverside has prompted leaders there to threaten fines against residents who insist on leaving food outside their homes for wildlife.
Village leaders had asked residents not to feed birds, squirrels and other wildlife. But too many people didn't listen.
That's why trustees approved a fine of up to 250 dollars for anyone caught leaving food, feed or bird seed outside their homes.
John McKenna, who owns Viking Pest Control, said the food attracts rats. It can be very difficult even for professionals like him to get rid of the rats.
“Rats, they’re not stupid. They avoid anything new in their environment. And they kind of shun the poison. Once they start to get sick they just stop eating the poison. So, it can be difficult.”
The village administrator in North Riverside said residents may have meant well. Those who put food outside their homes for wildlife will be warned about the fine and educated about the problem.
People who insist on doing so after that will face fines, she said.
