(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago police officer shot and wounded earlier this week was accidentally hit by another officer's gunfire, officials with a watchdog agency announced Thursday.

The officer was struck in the hand Monday evening in the 5600 block of South Shields as police attempted to make a traffic stop.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates police-involved shootings, says another officer struck their colleague while firing on a fleeing sedan.

“There is currently no indication that shots were fired from the sedan, or by any other civilian and there are no reports of a gun recovered,” a COPA official said in a statement.

The officer who was wounded was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation continues.
