(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A Chicago police officer was wounded by gunfire Monday evening in Englewood, officials said.

The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Shields as police were attempting to make a traffic stop, Interim Police Supt. Fred Waller said.

Details were being pieced together, but the male officer was shot in the left hand and multiple suspects fled the scene, he said.

The injured officer's partner transported him to University of Chicago Medical Center. He had non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Waller said he talked with the officer and he was in "good spirits."

Two other police officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution, the Chicago Fire Department told CBS Chicago.

After the incident police responded to a second location, 91st and Princeton, where there was a crash that was believed to be related.

Police were reviewing bodycam video of the incident, he said. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was also investigating.
