Potential restrictions on natural gas get cool reception at City Hall

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Some aldermen, business leaders and labor groups are calling for a cautious approach to a proposal to ban natural gas in new Chicago buildings.

Backers of the Clean and Affordable Buildings Ordinance plan to introduce the measure at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. It would require new buildings in Chicago to use all-electric heating and cooking.

But 36th Ward Ald. Gilbert Villegas joined a chorus of council colleagues, union reps and others warning the measure will raise energy prices for residents. They agree climate change is a legitimate issue, but Villegas said the proposed ban on natural gas needs more study and input from the public.

Waylon Johnson Jr. with the Southland Chamber of Commerce said if ComEd suffers a power outage, customers in all-electric residences would be left in the lurch.
