(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said he's at his wit's end over the Food and Drug Administration’s suspension of its recent ban on the heavily marketed electronic cigarettes known as Juul.

Although the FDA banned Juul from selling its e-cigarettes on June 23, a weeks-long court battle resulted in the FDA placing a hold on its initial ban while the court case continues to move forward. In the meantime, the FDA decided Juul can continue selling its e-cigarettes.

Durbin is displeased.

Durbin said he's been fighting for years to get the FDA to ban the sale of the Juul company's flavored and menthol e-cigarettes, as they contain the same addictive chemical as tobacco cigarettes: nicotine.

The head of the FDA seemed to agree, Durbin said.

Durbin said he was heartened when the FDA said it would ban the sale of Juul's e-cigarettes.

After the FDA's suspension of its initial ban, though, Durbin said it's the young people who'll suffer if these products stay on the shelves.

“They basically say you can’t sell a product until we approve it as being safe,” Durbin said. “They can never prove e-cigarettes are safe for you, because they’re not.”
