For the first time in Illinois, a dog has a confirmed case of COVID.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Veterinary Medicine said that dog from Chicago has become the first canine in Illinois to be diagnosed with COVID-19.

The animal had been experiencing respiratory illness and recently tested positive for the virus. The college said the source of the infection appears to be someone who was caring for the dog around New Year's Day while the owners were away.

Across the country, 97 dogs have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic.
