(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Even with $1 tickets, the crowd turnout was low Thursday at Guaranteed Rate Field as the White Sox took on the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“Even though they have dollar tickets, they can’t even fill up the sections,” said Hugo Conde of Evergreen Park.

Conde was among the Cubs fans who came out to support their cross-town rivals. The cheap tickets and free parking were part of an end-of-season promotion by the struggling White Sox (61-98).

Attendance was reported at 23,522; the ballpark holds 40,600. But those who came said they were happy to hang out.

“I took today off work and Corbin took the day off school here so today we could come to the game,” says Sherri Caine, a teacher from the South Side who brought her child.

The White Sox defeated the Diamondbacks 3-1. The Cubs were scheduled to play the Braves Thursday evening as the North Siders try to enter the playoffs with the last National League wild card.
