CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The University of Chicago issued a warning about an armed carjacking on campus early Monday morning.

In a security alert, University of Chicago police said someone not affiliated with the university was carjacked at around 2:30 a.m. near 61st Street and Kenwood Avenue.

Police said the driver was sitting in a white Jeep when three people got out of a red Kia, showed handguns and demanded that he get out.

The carjackers then took off in the Jeep, officials said.

University police encouraged students and staff to be alert and aware of their surroundings at all times — and not to resist an armed robbery unless absolutely necessary.

Chicago police officers are investigating the carjacking.
