(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Ophthalmologists with Cook County Health will be on the lookout for people with vision problems after next Monday’s solar eclipse.

After the 2017 eclipse, Dr. Shweta Choudhary estimates they saw more than a dozen patients at the Cook County Vision Care Clinic at Stroger Hospital, including two who damaged their retinas.

Complications may not show up for days or even weeks but the damage can be permanent, depending on how long a person looks at the eclipse without the proper protection.

She suggests using glasses with solar filters that have an ISO rating of 12312-2.

Symptoms of eye damage may include: eye pain, and a feeling like a foreign body is stuck in the eye.
