BARRINGTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Bomb threats made to a north suburban high school on Monday were ruled to be unfounded.
In a joint statement to parents, Police Chief David Dorn and Barrington 220 School District Superintendent Dr. Robert Hunt said the threats were in connection to a growing hoax trend known as “swatting."
Law enforcement identify swatting as making a prank call to emergency services in order to draw a large armed police response to a specific address.
Two separate threats were made Monday afternoon, one was computerized.
Police evacuated the school while the Cook County Bomb Squad completed a search of the campus. Technicians did not find any bomb materials.
The school campus remained closed Monday night, but reopened Tuesday.
“We understand that events like this can cause stress and anxiety; therefore, school psychologists, counselors, and social workers will be available on Tuesday for anyone who wishes to speak to them,” the joint statement said.
In response to Monday’s events, the school postponed all test taking for students.
