WILMINGTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Flash flooding has begun along parts of the Kankakee River after recent rains exacerbated problems with ice jams.
The Will County Emergency Management Agency reported flash flooding Thursday night in downtown Wilmington, prompting them to use the reverse 911 system to warn residents and deploy rescue teams to evacuate people on the North and South Islands.
The County said 14 people have been evacuated from the flooding so far but that could grow as the ice jam has not broken all the way yet.
The Moose Lodge is serving as an emergency shelter as the river rose three feet in one hour overnight.
Flooding could be a problem throughout the day as ice is expected to continue to melt.
