"It's not just during the holidays": Need for help at Greater Chicago Food Depository extends year-round

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Food insecurity is on the rise in Chicago. One in five households in Chicagoland faces food insecurity, according to the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

"It really is a need year-round; food insecurity is a huge issue in Chicago," said Camerin Matteson, communications manager at the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository distributes food to over 800 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other meal programs throughout Cook County. Each day hundreds of volunteers come together to help the organization redistribute food across Chicagoland. Matteson says there's been a rise in attendance at partner pantries across the city.

"It's not just during the holidays; our neighbors are really in need right now," said Matteson.

WBBM visited the Greater Chicago Food Depository to learn more about the volunteering process. Smiles and music blared across the facility as volunteers repackaged apples and pasta for their neighbors.

Matteson said volunteer rates tend to dip after the holiday season but the need for help remains year round, especially during winter months. As heating bills rise, many Chicago residents struggle to make ends meet.

"We get more volunteers during the holiday season but the need continues into January, February and March," said Matteson.

The high rates of volunteers during the holidays have had tremendous results. This year alone, Matteson estimates that her organization will serve approximately 140,000 households with a holiday meal. Those meals include almost a million pounds of holiday food items like turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce and more.

"We want all of our neighbors to sit around the table with their family and their loved ones and enjoy that special holiday meal," said Matteson.

Matteson believes increased volunteer rates year-round can create more groundbreaking results to tackle food insecurity across Chicago. For more information on pantry locations and ways to get involved, visit chicagosfoodbank.org.
