(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One year after a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot while trick-or-treating, a Gary man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for his murder.

Desmond L. Crews Jr., 24, was arrested for a shooting in which 13-year-old Thomas DeLaCruz Jr. was killed and another teenage boy was wounded. It happened outside the Williamsburg Apartments in Hammond's Hessville neighborhood.

Crews pleaded guilty in September to one count of murder. He was the first of multiple co-defendants.

Two other defendants, Sheldon Stokes and Richard Walker, have pleaded not guilty to murder. Their trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 30.

A fourth man pleaded guilty to aggravated battery. Police said DeLaCruz was shot after arguing with Stokes.
